Email marketing remains one of the most effective ways to connect to your audience and grow your business.
Most business owners know that they need one – but do not always a) know how to start one, or b) what to say once one is up & running.
The following guide on email marketing for businesses contains not only how to start an email list and build one, but also ideas for creating compelling content that stands out in bulging inboxes.
Having an email strategy is usually one of the first things I talk about with clients when we begin working with each other.
Start an email list.
One of the key benefits of email marketing is its low cost, with an average ROI of £34 for every £1 spent. I’ve written an email campaign with a 60% conversion where the average spend per head was £120 – which isn’t too shabby from a small email list.
The trick to email marketing is to start a list.
If you need help with that, I wrote a FREE GUIDE to walk you through the process. Just follow the link HERE
Once you have an email full of people who are interested in you & what you have to say, you need to be sending out to it regularly. An engaged subscriber list is a wondrous thing. You’re speaking directly to your audience. You can curate the content and demonstrate just how awesome your product & service is – and showcase your expertise.
All from an email.
How often should you send it out to an email list?
Well, that depends on several factors – including what you do/sell, how much time you have, and how easily you find things to talk about.
I know business owners who mail out daily/weekly, and some monthly.
Whatever your aim is – make sure that it’s consistent. If it’s once a week on a Friday then it goes out once a week on a Friday. You don’t have to send it out then. You can schedule the content on mail-senders and not think about it once it’s done.
What types of emails should I send?
Now for the fun part of having an email list. You have to do the writing. That involves thinking about who you’re trying to sell to – which leads us to my favourite part – Ideal Client.
Yay.
Not.
But this doesn’t mean naming the bloody ideal client avatar and inventing where they shop – but it does mean thinking about what you want to say to people. Imagine that your client was in front of you and asking you about your product. What would you say to them?
No – not “here, buy my shit.”
Crafting effective email marketing content requires careful consideration and a deep understanding of your ideal client. Think about the problems your product or service solves and use that as the foundation for your content strategy.
Now we’re marketing.
There are several different types of emails that you can send out:
- Newsletters: Share updates, recent blog posts, and product launches, providing a round-up of stories about your business.
- Onboarding: Welcome new customers, introduce your business, and highlight your best-sellers or your brand’s personality.
- Nurturing: Guide customers through your sales funnel, introducing them to other products that may interest them.
- New product launches: Announce new products and encourage customers to check them out.
- Recommendations: Suggest relevant products or services based on customer preferences.
- Cart abandonment: Remind customers of items left in their shopping cart, potentially prompting a purchase.
- Cross-selling: Promote complementary products or services to encourage additional purchases.
- Replenishment reminders: Encourage repeat purchases when customers haven’t ordered in a while.
- Discounts/Sales: Share exclusive promotions or seasonal sales to boost revenue.
As you can see, it’s a big old subject – which is why it takes some serious consideration.
If you’re struggling to manage your email list or create engaging content that connects with your audience, it might be time to hire a copywriter to do the work for you.
