Your Ideal Client Has Evolved – Here’s How to Catch Up

Your ideal client: that perfect person for whom your business is built around. You have written the content and built your offers, using words that made that person nod along and book in. But lately, when you’re sharing your posts and showing up like you used to, things aren’t quite hitting the mark. Somewhere between where you were and where you are now, your ideal client has evolved.

If you’re getting polite claps instead of real conversations. Or your calls are not converting.

If your content isn’t even getting a polite nibble, let alone a chunky bite.

Well, it’s not the algorithm Gods, nor is it because you’re crap at what you do.

It’s because your audience has evolved.

This blog isn’t about starting from scratch. It’s how to catch up.

Why your marketing isn’t quite working these days.

You have done all the work around your ideal client: the worksheet, the profile, and the deeper work in working out who they are and what keeps them awake at night.  You’ve built your entire business messaging around speaking directly to this person – the one who was simply perfect for what you offered.

You’re writing the blogs, sharing the posts, and turning up online, doing your marketing. Your engagement looks fine, except no one is picking up the phone. Or the calls that do come through leave the call with a regretful face, telling you ‘I’ll have a think’.

Your ideal client work is never a one-and-done. People are constantly evolving. Markets evolve.

You have evolved.  New tech launches. Industries shift. People get married, have kids, lose jobs, relationships fail, and they have to start over.  They change what they value, how they spend, where they hang out online.

Hell, if you think about the shit show we’ve all been through for the last 6 years – I’d bet good money that none of us are the same people we were in 2019, let alone 6 months ago.

It’s not that your offer is bad. Your audience has evolved.

A misalignment between messaging and the ideal client doesn’t arrive with sirens and flashing lights. The signs creep in quietly. You’re saying ‘yes’ to a client whom you would have turned down before, just to get some cash into the business. You lose faith in your content because, well, no one seems interested.

These aren’t failures – they’re signs of growth. As you level up in business, your experience deepens, your business strengthens, your training and development skills increase, and naturally, this means that your ideal client changes, too.

The problem comes when most business owners don’t pause long enough to notice.

In order to catch up with this evolution, start by looking at where your messaging and your audience might have drifted apart, and then how to bring them back into alignment.

5 Signs Your Ideal Client (and Messaging) Aren’t Working Anymore

When your messaging and your ideal client are mismatched, things start to get a bit messy. There are lots of telltale hints that crop up when your business has outgrown its original audience:

  1. People booking your calls aren’t quite right. You’re getting interest, but not from the people you actually want to work with. Maybe they love what you do, but quibble over your new prices. Maybe they’re too early in their journey and aren’t quite ready for you, or their goals just don’t stick a fire under your arse anymore. You don’t need more leads like this whilst trying to find the needle in the proverbial haystack; you need different ones. That comes with refining who you’re talking to.
  2. Your website is offering a version of you that no longer exists. You’ve grown. Your services have changed, but your website still says you do the thing you stopped offering last year. Your testimonials are no longer relevant because that’s the work you did 6 years ago. That disconnect breeds hesitation – not just for your audience, but for you, too. If you’re hesitating to send new queries through to your website, it’s time for a change.
  3. If the work you want to do is not the work that’s coming in through the door. You’re craving higher-level projects, deeper collaborations, or a different type of client altogether (think start-ups vs someone who has been in business a decade). This is a sign that your core business messaging is still speaking to your past audience, not your present one.
  4. Your messaging is off – and you KNOW it. You avoid posting because you’re not quite sure what to say, or it simply doesn’t feel right. You open up that old sales page and think, fuck, not this again. That discomfort isn’t imposter syndrome; it’s a misalignment. When your voice, values and goals shift, your content has to move with them.
  5. You’re hiding your booking link. You’re nervous about who is going to turn up to the call, and whether or not you’re the right one for them. Even worse, they’ll want that course that hasn’t been altered since computers had CRT monitors. You’re worried that the people who turn up to the calls will waste your time. When your words are dialled in, these people are already pre-qualified. They know what you’re about, what you can offer, and they know that you’re the one to solve their problems, price be damned.

This misalignment between ideal client and messaging costs you – time, money, effort, and potential clients. It’s hard to gain any sort of momentum in business when your marketing is pitching to an audience that is not for you.

Your ideal client doesn’t stay static, and neither should your messaging.

How to catch up with your evolved ideal client (without starting from scratch)

If you recognise yourself in any of those signs above, the good news is that you don’t need a full rebrand. You just need to realign your messaging to your new audience.

A short, focused exercise to figure out:

  • Who you’re really speaking to now.

  • What’s changed in how they think, buy, and behave.

  • How your messaging needs to evolve to meet them there.

Start here:

Audit what’s working & what isn’t: Think of your last 3 clients. Who made you feel energised, creatively fulfilled, and valued? Who didn’t?

  • Listen to the language that your clients are using. It’s in their emails, their social posts, and the social comments. What exact words are they using to describe their problem?
  • Update one piece at a time. Start with your website headline, your About Intro in LinkedIn, or your service tagline. Change that first.
  • Review your last 10 posts or blogs. Do these reflect your service now?  Are the topics relevant to your new audience? Review these themes.
