Marketing Clarity Starts with Knowing Who the Hell You’re Talking To

How to Get Clear in Your Marketing Content

Unless you’re selling dog food, knowing what kind of dog your client has probably isn’t going to transform your business. Knowing your ideal client in content marketing can change everything. I was several years into running my own business before I ever heard of an ideal client exercise. When I was presented with a form full of pertinent questions about this mythical creature, my ‘ideal client avatar’, I stared at it like it had just asked me to recite the periodic table backwards.

Name your client. Give them a job. A pet. A favourite tea brand. Are they into Peloton or paddleboarding?

And I remember thinking: How TF am I meant to know ANY of this? What is the relevance of my business services, and whether they prefer Earl Grey or peppermint?

It felt like I was back in GCSE drama class, roleplaying Sharon, a 37-year-old HR manager with a mild Pinterest addiction, who drinks rosé and craves emotional stability. I hated every second of it.

Once I’d dutifully filled in this make-believe nonsense, the facilitator beamed and said,
“Ta-da! Now you can do your marketing.”

Right.

Now I’m a bit older. It took me a while, and a proper education in what ideal client work is, to realise this exercise wasn’t supposed to be a fluffy journaling session. It’s not about inventing a quirky character. It’s about understanding the real, breathing humans you’re trying to reach, and it forms the foundation of any marketing you want to do in your business.

When you understand who you’re talking to, it is what makes your marketing finally work FOR you. It makes marketing yourself a helluva lot easier.

So, unless you’re selling dog food (in which case, yes, knowing the dog breed does help), you need to be thinking way deeper than surface-level demographics.

Ideal Client Work: Why It Matters

Marketing isn’t about broadcasting to the masses. You’re not IKEA or Amazon. You’re a small business owner, and unless you’ve got a multi-million-pound ad budget to spray your message across every available platform, you’ve got to get specific.

Your ideal client shapes everything in your marketing, and your content needs to feel like a personal message, written just for the person reading or watching.

And you can’t create that kind of content if you don’t know who you’re talking to. You want your messaging to be specific enough to be memorable.  For this, you need to be really intentional about what you say and who you say it to.

Forget demographics. We’re talking psychographics. What your ideal client thinks, feels, worries about, and secretly Googles at 1 am. Not whether they drink oat milk or drive a Volvo.

  • What keeps them up at night?
  • What are they desperate to change in their life or business?
  • What would success feel like for them?
  • How would they feel after working with you?

When you know this stuff, your content stops feeling like a shout into the void and starts sounding like the answer they’ve been searching for. And if what you’re doing now isn’t getting results? It’s time to do something else. As with all marketing, you gotta try it. Test it. Tweak it. Go again.

Knowing your ideal client stuff takes away the guesswork, helping you get clearer in your marketing content.

When You Don’t Know Your Ideal Client, Your Content Marketing Suffers

You’re churning out marketing content, yet nothing you put out is getting noticed. Kind of feels like you’re standing naked at a party and being ignored. This is a sign that your content is not doing its job.
If you’re changing your messaging every five minutes, hoping something sticks, that’s not strategy. That’s panic.

When you’re unclear on your ideal client:

  • Your content is generic
  • Your messaging is inconsistent
  • Your leads are… lukewarm at best
  • You start doubting whether marketing even works for you

Unless you’ve got an advertising budget like Nike and can afford to plaster your business message across buses, leaflet drops and Love Island ad breaks, you need to get really specific in your messaging. You’re a small business owner. You’re not for everyone. And that’s fine. People who buy Nike products probably won’t buy Reebok or New Balance trainers. But Nike can afford to do mass advertising to speak to the masses. You can’t.

This is where your ideal client information counts, and your marketing content starts doing the heavy lifting for you.

You need your content to resonate with the right people. The ones who are Googling the exact problem you can solve for them.

You want someone to stumble across your business and get a little obsessed. You want them to know right off the bat what you do and how you help solve the problems they’re battling. You want them to check you out on Instagram. Read your blog, which shows your brilliant brain in action. Lurk on your website that tells them exactly what you do and sets your business tone. Stalk your LinkedIn profile like an ex with unresolved issues. Sign up for your newsletter so they can get a feel for how you work and scroll back six issues. Videos so that they can hear your voice and see your face. Draw them into your funnel.

All before they ever spend a penny in your business.

Because these days, clients don’t just buy on a whim. They’re clever. They’re used to the same old selling bullshit. The false promises. They’ve had it with wild claims and sweeping statements. They lurk. Watch you from the sidelines. They snoop. They research. They want to be romanced. And you are wooing them with every word, video, and blog post.

This is what it means to create binge-worthy content. And it only works when your ideal client is crystal clear.

clear marketing content starts with knowing who you're talking to

Why Isn’t Your Marketing Messaging Working?

Your content should work like a filter, not a fishing net.

It’s meant to qualify your people before they get in touch, deter the tyre kickers and time-wasters, and help make the decision-making part easier (for them and you)

If you’re:

  • Not attracting as many perfect-fit clients as you’d like
  • Relying on referrals and praying that something lands
  • Posting content daily with no real plan, and it’s all fallen off the algorithm cliff
  • Getting ghosted after discovery calls
  • Not sure how to articulate what problems you solve.

Then your ideal client probably isn’t clear enough.
Or your messaging isn’t consistent enough.
Or both.

Marketing isn’t about doing more. It’s about doing what works and doing it well. Over and over again.
And all that starts with knowing who the hell you’re talking to.

Spray & Pray Marketing
What happens when your content marketing isn’t clear…

This concept is what I consider akin to throwing jelly at the wall whilst trying to hit the bullseye. You don’t need everyone to love you.

You just need the right people to find you and know instantly that you’re the one who gets it.

You don’t need the whole world to turn up in your inbox (imagine how many dickheads there would be included in those enquiries that would be your worst nightmare & make you want to rush back into employment. Ugh. No, thank you!)

You just need your people.

Sharing credible, valuable and relevant content is how you begin to build the know-like-trust element of marketing. It gets you known for the thing you do. Converts lurkers into leads. Leads into conversations. Conversations into a sale.

Good Marketing = Clarity + Consistency + The Right People

Marketing Clarity = Business Confidence

Knowing your ideal client is how you stop guessing.
It’s how you write content faster.
It’s how you become the obvious choice to the people who are actively looking for someone like you.

Business changes. And so do your clients.

My business today looks nothing like it did five years ago. And if business has changed, you can bet your ideal client problems have changed, too. Post-pandemic. Cost-of-living chaos. Hybrid working. AI everything. Your clients are not the same people they were three years ago. They’ve evolved. Come across new worries, new behaviours, new expectations.

If your content hasn’t adapted, it’s no wonder things have gone a bit… quiet.
